ABOUT TEXT-TO-911

Even in areas where call centers accept text-to-911, existing voice-based 911 service is still the most reliable and preferred method of contact.

If you are hiking solo and you are injured in locations without cell phone coverage then you need to take an Iridium satellite Global 2-way text device (Zoleo or Inreach) which will send your GPS location in the SOS. If you have a buddy they could hike to a ridge that has cell phone coverage and call 911 but looking at the 4G LTE coverage that is problematic in the back country. Many 911 centers across the nation are NOT equipped to receive location information from your cell phone so be ready to provide your GPS/map coordinates/trail mile marker. When you click a phone number your current GPS location will be displayed.

Bounce-back messages

If you attempt to send a text to 911 where the service is not yet available, FCC rules require all wireless carriers and other text messaging providers to send an automatic "bounce-back" message that will advise you to contact emergency services by another means, such as making a voice call or using telecommunications relay service. Bounce-back messages are intended to minimize your risk of mistakenly believing that a text to 911 has been transmitted to an emergency call center when it has not.

Coverage beyond mobile networks – via Iridium Satellite
